Popular car upgrades can lead to drivers paying more for their insurance, a cover provider pointed out today.
Drivers who modify their car can expect to face increased car insurance premiums, Direct Line warned today.
The car insurance provider said that the costs rose because common modifications, such as rear wings and tinted windows, can make the vehicle much more attractive to thieves. Overhauling the engine can also boost a car's speed - which has a knock-on effect on the likelihood of becoming involved in an accident.
Direct Line's comments follow the release of research, showing that performing the car upgrades can lead to premium increases of up to 139 per cent. However, the recent success of TV shows such as Pimp My Ride has also hinted at a recent upswing in interest regarding the modifications.
Jennifer Culley, spokesperson for Direct Line, said: "Generally, any modifications to your car that increase the performance, value or its desirability to a thief will attract increased premiums as they may raise the risk, value or likelihood of a claim."
She added: "Make sure you notify your insurer prior to performing any modification so that you know how much they will increase your premium and if the risk is still acceptable. Once the modifications have been fitted, make sure they are noted on your policy to ensure you have the cover you need and you are not invalidating your policy."
