The largest broadband provider in the UK has put on 150,000 new customers since the beginning of the year.

The UK's biggest broadband firm currently provides the service to over 4.4 million users, ISPreview.co.uk reports.

In its latest preliminary results, BT said that it had added 150,000 subscribers since the beginning of the year.

By the end of March, the provider also retains 12.7 million wholesale broadband connections; a 1.3 million increase over late 2007. Around four million of these lines are overseen by rival service providers through local loop unbundling, however.

Internet TV service BT Vision is also on the up and now retains 214,000 subscribers. This is a 94,000 increase over the quarter.

Likewise, BT's Home IT Support Service grew from 23,000 to 41,000 across the three months.

Elsewhere, the firm said that its overall revenue dropped 12 per cent to £1.2 billion over the quarter and that its broadband revenue also fell by £54 million due to "anticipated price reductions".

Currently, the closest UK rival to BT in terms of broadband subscribers is Virgin Media, which retains 3.78 million subscribers; a figure approximately 600,000 customers behind the telecoms firm.

The carphone warehouse, Tiscali and Sky Broadband round out the top five with 2.7 million, 1.88 million and 1.43 million customers respectively.
